"1984" – a play based on George Orwell’s classic novel

"1984" – a play based on George Orwell’s classic novelBookings at the Goldfields Arts Centre. Performances at Stage Left Theatre in Boulder.
Saturday, June 25, 2011, 7:30 – 10:30pm

“1984” – the play inspired by George Orwell’s classic novel
Written by Michael Gene Sullivan
Directed by Kevin Blair

Imagine a world where freedom of thought is ruthlessly suppressed, where “the few dominate the masses” through lies and deception, where perpetual war is waged against an unseen enemy only to control the state; a world where Ignorance is Strength, Freedom is Slavery, and War is Peace.

In this world, Winston Smith struggles for freedom. Freedom from the state to say what he wants, do what he wants, think what he wants. But the state is ruthless.

This is the world George Orwell created more than half a century ago in his novel “1984” – with the infamous catch cry “Big Brother is watching you…..” and its prescience of today’s world is stunning.

Director Kevin Blair will be staging six performances of a powerful stage adaptation of "1984" written by Michael Gene Sullivan, at the Stage Left Theatre Troupe Barracks – June 10, 11, 17, 18, 24 and 25.

Four “Party interrogators” re-enact scenes from Winston Smith’s forbidden diary and his “crimes” against Big Brother – taking on the challenge of various roles, moods and characters to bring this incredible story to the stage.

Starring: Andrew Smith as O’Brien, Dylan Sercombe as Winston Smith, Zach Hawke as Interrogator 1, Lisa van Oyen as Interrogator 2, David Holle as Interrogator 3 and Michael McLeod as Interrogator 4.

*** This production contains adult themes, sexual content and strong language.

The next FOUR sessions will include the following information:
Script interpretation, style of directing, directing actors, audition
techniques and scheduling rehearsals.

Dates/times
* Saturday May 14th 1pm to 3pm
* Thursday May 19th 7.30pm to 9.30pm (Sat May 21st is Shakespeare workshop)
* Saturday May 28th 1pm to 3pm
* Saturday June 4th – public holiday long weekend NO SESSION
* Saturday June 11th 1pm to 3pm
* Saturday June 18th 1pm to 3pm
* Saturday June 25th 1pm to 3pm
Costs
A one-week directing course at NIDA costs $550. We have endeavoured to bring
you the best of the best from that training at a reduced cost.
The workshops on offer are derived from three Summer Schools at NIDA in Sydney, and various courses in directing and acting. All of the information will fit together and help equip you as a director and/or production team member.

We have valued each session at a mere $35 per person (per week). WOWKAL offers a discount to Stage Left members (must be a 2011 financial member) at $25 per person instead. *** Non-members will pay full price

If you are indeed a financial 2011 Stage Left member, your fees can be
further subsidised by Stage Left IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO, as a membership benefit from the Stage Left Training Budget. This option will see your fees reduced by another $10 – so the cost is $15 per person per week (to be paid in full). You must indicate if you would like to take up this option. If so….. that would mean Total cost = $90 – payments in cash, or cheque (payable to WOWKAL)
*** NB for those who only wish to do the first two weeks of the course
(Three TED’s) your cost is $30 (based on the above information and
calculations!)
